Using databases

One of the best ways to get reliable and up-to-date information on subjects in healthcare is to look for articles in peer-reviewed journals. You might also want to find books, conference proceedings or reports on your subject of interest.

To find healthcare literature, you can search a bibliographic database. This is a collection of details about (mostly) journal articles: their title, author, journal and sometimes a short description of the article (an abstract). Some databases also index details of book chapters, conference papers, reports and guidelines.

For books and reports, you could also look in the catalogue of your local library.

You will not normally find the whole text of an article or a report in a bibliographic database. See the Online books and journals page for details.

There are a variety of databases you can use to find journal articles, reports, book chapters and conference proceedings.

You will need a password to access some of the databases listed below. See the NHS ATHENS passwords page to register online for a password.

Allied and Complementary Medicine (AMED)	Allied healthcare and alternative / complementary medicine.	enter your password then choose AMED	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

British National Formulary (BNF)	Information on medicines in the UK. Includes prescription guidelines and pricing. Browse by condition, or search for drugs, conditions or preparations.		No password needed

BNF for Children (BNFC)	Information on the use of medicines for children from birth to adolescence.		No password needed

British Nursing Index (BNI)	Journal articles relevant to UK nurses and midwives.	enter your password then choose BNI	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

CINAHL	Large database covering nursing, midwifery and allied health.	enter your password then choose CINAHL	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

Cochrane Library	Collection of databases of high-quality systematic reviews of effectiveness, economic evaluations and clinical trials.		No password needed

EMBASE	All aspects of medicine, with an emphasis on pharmacology.	enter your password then choose EMBASE	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

Health Business Elite	Contains full text content from 480 journals, detailing all aspects of health care administration and other non-clinical aspects of health care institution management.	enter your password then choose Health Business Elite	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

HMIC	Policy and management of health and social care services in the UK. Includes informally published material e.g. pamphlets and reports.	enter your password then choose HMIC	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

Images	A collection of freely available medical images		No password needed

Medline	All aspects of medicine, including dentistry, veterinary medicine and medical psychology.	enter your password then choose Medline	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

National Research Register	Ongoing and recently completed research projects funded by, or of interest to, the NHS.		No password needed

OMIM	Database of human genes and genetic disorders, from the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the USA. Includes links to references in Medline.	and choose OMIM from the toolbar	No password needed

OT Seeker	Occupational therapy evidence database, compiled by occupational therapists at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.		No password needed

PEDRO	Physiotherapy evidence database, compiled by the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy in Sydney.		No password needed

PsycInfo	Psychology and psychological aspects of medicine, psychiatry, nursing and other areas.	enter your password then choose PsycInfo	Requires an NHS ATHENS password

Social Care Online	Journal articles and resources covering all aspects of social care in the UK.		No password needed

ZETOC	British Library's Electronic Table of Contents service. Search bibliographic details and set up alerts.		Setting up alerts requires an NHS ATHENS password
