In order to access all of our electronic resources listed below, you must have an OpenAthens username and password.

Athens is a secure portal that provides you with a username and password. 

All ESNEFT staff are entitled to sign up for an OpenAthens account. Having an NHS Athens username and password gives you the right to access the many and varied electronic resources such as the health databases, e-books and e-journals made available to you by the NHS.

Books and Journals

Our book and journal collections cover all aspects of healthcare and are supplemented by the book and journal collections of other NHS libraries in the East of England. Use the catalogue to search and request books from both the Trust and regional libraries. Search the Library catalogue here:

If you cannot find the book or journal you need, you can request it via our interlibrary loan service.

We have made it easy for you to access books wherever you are, whenever is convenient for you. Kortext provides you with access to over 150 ebooks.

Visit Select East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust as your institution and sign-in with your OpenAthens username and password. Once you have signed in, you will see the ebook discovery page. From here, search and browse ebooks in the Collections tab. Click the "view this book" button underneath the ebook you would like to read.

The Health Service Journal

All ESNEFT staff have free access to the Health Service Journal online (HSJ). This is the best way to stay up to date with what’s happening across the NHS every day.

HSJ content can also be accessed via the HSJ APP, available to download for free from the Apple ‘App’ Store & Google Play.

To register for access, input your personal details and email address on the registration page: CLICK HERE  

You must use your @ESNEFT email address.

Alternatively, email to request access.  You will then receive a welcome email within 48 hours.

Colchester Hospital Library

A maximum of 8 books can be borrowed for 28 days. Up to 10 renewals are possible as long as nobody else has requested the book. 

Books can be borrowed and returned via the self-service machine in the Library. Books can also be returned to the blue book drop box on the pavement outside of the Postgraduate Medical Centre building.


Ipswich Hospital Library

A maximum of 8 books can be borrowed for 28 days.

During staffed hours books should be borrowed and returned via the library office.  Out of staffed hours books should be returned via the red secure return box outside of the library.



Healthcare Databases

To access the online Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) click here.  This provides you with access to the nationally purchased journals and databases. You are also able to access extra content which has been purchased by the library including MEDLINE Complete and CINAHL complete.

HDAS allows you to search databases including Medline, Embase, AMED, CINAHL and BNI. Training sessions on how to use the healthcare databases are available. Email Colchester OR Ipswich Library


Business Databases

All ESNEFT staff have access to the following two databases in addition to those supplied through HDAS.

Business Source Complete: covers all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, accounting, banking, finance and more.

Health Business Elite: comprehensive journal content detailing all aspects of healthcare administration and other non-clinical aspects of healthcare institution management.


KnowledgeShare is a targeted current awareness service which provides you with personalised updates relevant to your professional interests on a regular basis. The alerts include resources such as guidelines and systematic reviews along with selected journals. You choose how frequently you would like to receive updates.

All ACE and ESNEFT staff can have access to this service.

To join KnowledgeShare, fill in this application form and return to our secure email or directly to Colchester or Ipswich library. You need to have an OpenAthens account to use this service.

Knowledge Share Privacy Policy


Provides users with access to over 600 full text journals and more than 1000 eBooks. ClinicalKey is designed to provide you with clinically relevant answers.

Access via and sign in with your OpenAthens username and password.

View our video on how to access ClinicalKey from outside of the Trust and register for a personal account. A personal account is necessary in order to use all of the features of ClinicalKey, including downloading PDFs of books and saving your searches.


UpToDate is an evidenced based point of care tool providing clinical knowledge support. Access via and sign in with your OpenAthens account.

We also have access to the UpToDate Anywhere App.  This gives you the ability to download the App to your mobile device. 

To do this: 

  • On a hospital computer access UpToDate via the intranet.
  • Click Register and fill in the online form.
  • Download the app onto your mobile device and login.

To retain access you must log in to UpToDate on a hospital PC every 90 days.

Oxford Handbooks Online

We have access to the 10th edition of the Royal Marsden Manual Clinical and Cancer Nursing Procedures online. Access via and log in with your OpenAthens account.

BMJ Best Practice

​To access:

  1. Go to and click ‘Log In’ on the top right of the page.
  2. Select the ‘OpenAthens’ button and sign in with your OpenAthens account credentials. You will then be taken back to BMJ Best Practice.
  3. Once you have logged in to BMJ Best Practice, you can create a free personal account. Your personal account details will enable you to download the app.

BMJ Case Reports

ESNEFT Libraries and Evidence Services have purchased an institutional subscription to BMJ Case Reports, allowing all ESNEFT staff to publish their case reports at no cost to themselves. It means you can submit an unlimited number of cases to be peer-reviewed and published. BMJ Case Reports is indexed in MEDLINE (PubMed) and is an award winning journal that holds the largest repository of case reports. For more information click here.

Visible Body

Visible Body creates highly visual and interactive content for students and professionals who need to understand and communicate human anatomy, physiology, and pathology. All ESNEFT staff and students on placement have access to the following three anatomy apps from Visible Body:
